MUSEUM OF SEGOVIA – Casa del Sol (House of the Sun)

Museum of Segovia
Museum of Segovia

The Museum of Segovia, previously Regional Museum of Arts, dates back to 1842. It was made up of pieces of art coming from the convents closed by the Desamortizacion of Mendizabal which were not considered to be driven to the current Museum of El Prado.

After being placed in several buildings, the City gave the State an old building, the old slaughterhouse, working for that purpose from the time of Enrique IV, so-called Casa del Sol (House of the Sun). The exhibition is distributed in six rooms around the courtyard, where pieces of all ages are displayed. The first room, working as an introduction, is devoted to the territory’s geology and landscape, which explanations are supported in a huge model of the region and an audiovisual production.

In the second room we may find objects that belong to the period between Prehistory and the Late Middle Ages, including sections devoted to Roman world and the Aqueduct.

Among the collection, it’s worth highlighting two Celtiberian verracos (huge statues of bulls or wild boars), Roman mosaics, Visigoth enamels or a broad series of wooden paintings from castilian artists from the 15th and 16th centuries; along with interesting collections of coins moulded in the segovian Mint, glass pieces from La Granja, religious sculptures, engravings from Durero, Rembrandt and other authors, and contemporary paintings.

HOUSE-MUSEUM OF ANTONIO MACHADO

phoca_thumb_m_5-casa-museo-de-antonio-machado-habitacion-del-poeta
House-Museum of Antonio Machado

It was back in 1919 when the poet Antonio Machado came to Segovia for occupying a chair in the High School of the city. From that moment on, until he left Segovia in 1932, he rented a room in a house of the Desamparados street that, as time went by, was bought by the Academy of History and Arts of San Quirce, turning it into a permanent remembrance of the poet.

It’s a museum made for the most intimate evocation. The humble house remains as nude as it should have been when Antonio inhabited the place, and still preserves the same furniture. The room he occupied remains untouched, and from the walls, as for materializing his absence, hangs a collection of old pictures, along with paintings, drawings and posters which wear the signature of artists such as Rafael Peñuelas, Jesus Unturbe, Alvaro Delgado or Pablo Picasso.

MUSEUM OF ART CONTEMPORANEO ESTEBAN VICENTE

phoca_thumb_m_10-museo-de-arte-contemporaneo-esteban-vicente-exterior
Museum of art Contemporáneo Esteban Vicente

Opened in 1998, this museum is devoted to Esteban Vicente, an artist born in the segovian village of Turegano, educated in Madrid, sent into exile due to the Civil War, and the only Spanish member of the first generation of the New York School of American Abstract Expressionism. The collection is composed by oil paintings, collages, drawings, watercolours and sculptures by the artist, donated by him and his wife, Harriet Gotfried.

The exhibition of this Permanent Collection alternates with Temporal Exhibitions and diverse activities such as conferences, recitals and concerts.

The museum was set in the former Palace of Enrique IV Trastamara, built in the beginning of the 15th century by Juan II for his son. In 1518 it was transformed into a Hospital de Viejos (old people’s home), which chapel is preserved inside. Lately, it was converted into a Noble Arts School.

phoca_thumb_m_18-museo zuloaga-iglesia de san juan de cabarellos-exterior
Zuloaga Museum

It is set up inside the ancient church of San Juan de los Caballeros (11th-13th centuries). Structured in three naves with a three-headed apse. It also has arcades heading south and west. In the last one, it’s worth pointing out the Gothic doorway. It preserves remains of a Visigoth church (6th century)

It was saved from collapsing by the artist Daniel Zuloaga, who set up there his workshop.

In the museum, the visitor can find paintings from Ignacio Zuloaga, and oil paintings, watercolour paintings and ceramics of Daniel and his sons. Inside the church we may find also the burials of the Nobles Linajes (Noble Lineages) people, to whose founders, Fernan Garcia and Dia Sanz, the legend attributes the conquest of Madrid.

MUSEUM OF THE CATHEDRAL

phoca_thumb_m_museocatedralicio
Museum of the Cathedral

It was created in 1824 by the Bishop Manuel Castro Alonso, and set up in several rooms attached to the cloister. One of them is the Chapel of Santa Catalina, where we will find paintings of Flemish and Spanish painters. Either anonymous, as the Maestro de los Claveles or the Maestro de la Santa Sangre, or known, as Bernard van Orley, Marinus van Reymerswale, Pedro Berruguete, Luis de Morales, Alonso de Herrera or Antonio Maria Esquivel (the last one is the author to the historic painting "San Francisco de Borja ante Carlos V"). The collection on this room is also composed of notable pieces of gold and silver work, as well as the processional monstrance, made by the silver work master of the 17th century Rafael Gonzalez, native of Toledo.

Inside the Chapter House, covered with a marvellous renaissance ceiling that, according to the legend, is decorated with the first gold brought from America, stands out a magnificent series of tapestries, complemented with the ones hanging from the stairs leading to the Library. In there, it is set the best complement to this museum, the Archives, which holds documentation from the 13th century on, such as the library donated to the Cathedral by the Bishop Arias Davila, ancient songbooks, incunabula, and two priceless editorial jewels: the Cancionero de la Catedral, anthology of songs from Castilla and other European regions in the late 15th century, and the Sinodal de Aguilafuente, printed in Segovia by Juan Parix in 1472 and, therefore, the first book to be printed in Spain.
